Formidable, heavy trail with a high degree of overcoming that takes you to the largest seaside monolith in the world. Requires stamina and courage.
For lovers of ecotourism and adrenaline, Pedra da Gávea is the Holy Grail. It is the largest monolith by the sea in the world, rising to an imposing 844 meters in altitude. This is not a simple walk in the park; it is an expedition that demands excellent physical fitness, courage, and, preferably, the company of an experienced guide.
The full trail takes about 2.5 to 3 hours (just to go up). The route is an endurance test, with extremely steep climbs through the dense forest, giant roots, and scrambling sections (where you must use your hands). The critical and most dreaded point is the famous "Carrasqueira", a nearly vertical 30-meter rock face where the climb is done using ropes or climbing gear.
Overcoming this, however, delivers the greatest of all rewards. From the top of Pedra da Gávea, the feeling is like being on the roof of the world. The 360-degree view literally encompasses the entire city of Rio de Janeiro, from the ocean to the mountains, in a spectacle of grandeur that transforms whoever makes it to the top.
Cariocando Tip: Do not underestimate the mountain! Take, at a minimum, 2 to 3 liters of water per person, hearty snacks, and avoid hiking on rainy days or when the rocks are wet. Hiring a certified guide makes all the difference in safety, especially at the Carrasqueira.
