Discover 'BotaSoho' — Rio's current hub of alternative culture, indie nights and inventive gastronomy, all framed by Sugarloaf's silhouette.
Set aside the beaches for a moment. Botafogo — affectionately nicknamed "BotaSoho" by some, in reference to New York's creative district — is Rio's current hotbed of alternative culture, indie nightlife and inventive gastronomy. Strategically located between downtown and the Zona Sul, the neighborhood pulses with creativity on every corner.
During the day, Botafogo captivates with its views. The Enseada de Botafogo, with sailboats moored at the yacht club and the imposing Sugarloaf rising on the horizon, offers the city's most spectacular postcard vista. The neighborhood's old mansions, once aristocratic residences, now house independent cinemas, co-working spaces, alternative bookshops and small theatres.
When night falls, the neighborhood transforms. Streets like Nelson Mandela and Voluntários da Pátria fill with young people occupying sidewalk bars, gastropubs, burger joints and global cuisine restaurants. The vibe is young, laid-back and thoroughly democratic. In Botafogo, there's no dress code; what matters is good music, great conversation and an appetite for discovery.
Cariocando Tip: Head up to the rooftop terrace of Botafogo Praia Shopping in the late afternoon. Entry is free and the view from the top — encompassing the bay, the boats and Sugarloaf bathed in sunset light — is one of the most photogenic (and least obvious) vantage points in the city.
