Rio's main recreational landmark: 7 kilometers of cycling paths framing the placid waters of the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon.
At the geographic heart of the Zona Sul, cradled by the city's most prestigious neighborhoods and watched over by Christ the Redeemer's outstretched arms, lies Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas — or simply, "the Lagoa." More than a monumental stretch of water, Lagoa gives its name to a high-end residential neighborhood and serves as Rio de Janeiro's primary outdoor gathering place.
The Lagoa neighborhood is synonymous with well-being and active living. An approximately 7.5-kilometer cycling path circles the water, attracting runners, cyclists, skaters and families from the earliest morning hours until late into the night. The atmosphere is family-friendly, active and incredibly scenic. The light reflected on the water at dawn and dusk creates visual spectacles that justify why Rio is the "Marvelous City."
Beyond sport, Lagoa is an entertainment destination. Around its perimeter you'll find several parks, picnic areas and traditional rowing clubs. The entertainment complexes offer everything from sophisticated waterfront kiosks with live music to cinemas and upscale dining with lagoon views.
Cariocando Tip: Rent a bicycle (available via apps throughout the waterfront) in the late afternoon and make the full circuit around the Lagoa. Finish at one of the modern kiosks in the Curva do Calombo area, order an ice-cold coconut water and watch the sun set behind the mountains.
