Laranjeiras: Imperial Charm, Vibrant Squares and a Village-Like Soul

Aristocratic manor houses, century-old palaces and a lively bandstand at Praça São Salvador hosting weekly choro music circles.

Laranjeiras is, arguably, the most charming and captivating neighborhood in central-south Rio de Janeiro. One of the first neighborhoods to be occupied by imperial aristocracy in the 19th century, it still preserves a noble, intellectual and peaceful air, marked by historic palaces, streets lined with centuries-old trees and a vibrant sense of community.

Here stands the imposing Palácio Guanabara, the official seat of the State Government, along with the idyllic Parque Guinle — a retreat designed in the early 20th century that blends duck-inhabited lakes with modernist architecture by Lúcio Costa. The narrow sidewalks of Laranjeiras hide small terraced house rows, artists' studios, artisan bakeries and cafés that seem frozen in time.

The neighborhood's great cultural focal point is Praça São Salvador. Surrounded by traditional botecos, the square transforms into a vibrant beating heart that brings together different generations of residents, artists and students over good music and cold beer on the sidewalk.

Cariocando Tip: On Sunday mornings, Praça São Salvador hosts a delightful live choro music circle (Brazil's traditional instrumental music), surrounded by a small craft fair and regional food stalls. It's one of the most authentic, local and family-friendly experiences you can have in the city.
