In Rio, sunset isn't just an astronomical event — it's a collective ritual. At Arpoador, the crowd applauds as the golden disc vanishes behind Morro Dois Irmãos. But there are better alternatives for those seeking contemplation without elbowing.
Arpoador: The Crowded Classic
Pedra do Arpoador, at the border between Copacabana and Ipanema, is the most famous spot. The view is spectacular: in summer, the sun drops exactly between the Two Brothers hills, with surfers silhouetted against the water. But the rock gets packed from 4:30 PM. Arrive by 3:30 PM to secure a spot. In winter, the sun sets farther north and the effect is less dramatic, but the mild temperature makes up for it. Metro: General Osório (Line 1), Rua Teixeira de Melo exit, 10-minute walk.
Mureta da Urca: The Best-Kept Secret
The Mureta da Urca is a stone seawall along Guanabara Bay where locals sit with cold beers bought from Bar Urca (R$ 12 per long neck) and watch the sun paint Corcovado orange. No pushing, no aggressive hawkers. Order the shrimp empada (R$ 15) and stay until dark. The reflection of city lights on the bay at dusk is the bonus. How to get there: Uber from Botafogo (5 min) or a 20-min walk from Botafogo metro station along Rua Real Grandeza.
Forte do Leme: Elevated and Empty
Forte Duque de Caxias, atop Morro do Leme, offers a 360° view of Copacabana, Sugarloaf and the open ocean. The climb takes 20 minutes on a paved trail (access from Praça Almirante Júlio de Noronha). Entry closes at 5 PM, but those already inside can stay until sundown. Marmosets and toucans cross your path. Bring water — there's no vendor at the top.
Mirante do Leblon: Families and Photographers
At the far end of Leblon beach, where the boardwalk meets Morro Dois Irmãos, a paved lookout with benches offers a direct view of sunset over Pedra da Gávea. It's less known than Arpoador and more accessible than Forte do Leme. The kiosk Seu Vidal next door serves a Sicilian-lemon caipirinha for R$ 28.
Santa Teresa Pools: Quiet Luxury
Some boutique hotels in Santa Teresa — like Santa Teresa Hotel (Rua Almirante Alexandrino, 660) and Hotel & Spa Le Relais — have infinity pools facing Guanabara Bay. If you're a guest, sunset with a drink in hand and the whole city below is an experience no public viewpoint can replicate.
When to Go
In summer (December to March), sunset falls between 6:30 PM and 7:15 PM. In winter (June to August), between 5:15 PM and 5:40 PM. Arrive 45 minutes before the scheduled time to catch the golden light. Days with few clouds on the western horizon produce the most intense orange and pink tones.
